INTERVIEW
Unique Appeal of the Social Data Science Program
Social data science is a new research field, with no clear definition yet established. Essentially, any research program aimed at comprehending human behavior and social phenomena through the analysis of data falls within this field. Furthermore, the future direction of this research discipline remains largely unknown. I believe that the allure of the Department of Social Data Science lies in the potential to establish a brand new research field.
Innovative education and research encouraged in the Social Data Science Program
We make enormous decisions in our daily life, such as what to eat for lunch, whether to buy lottery tickets, whether to save our salary, and which stocks to invest in. My research interest lies in the brain mechanisms that support such decision-making. What kind of neural computations underlies human decision-making? How similar is the neural information processing that supports decision-making of human and artificial intelligence? Is it possible to understand mental disorders from the perspective of neural computations that support decision-making? I will tackle these issues in the Department of Social Data Science at Hitotsubashi University, through discussions with my colleagues and students.

MESSAGE
First of all, I hope you prioritize your physical and mental health. In addition, discovering a research question you're passionate about can make your student life more enjoyable. Ideally, pursuing this question can open doors to your future career. Hitotsubashi University provides various resources to support your pursuit, so I encourage you to engage with your professors (who are eager to talk with students) and take advantage of the student counseling services (where you can receive professional advice). By utilizing these valuable resources, you can enjoy a healthy and fulfilling student life both on and off campus.

RESEARCH
Most issues studied in social sciences arise from people's choices and decision-making. For instance, the price of a product is determined by the consequences of people's choices to "buy that" or "sell this". In my laboratory, we aim to elucidate the information processing in the brain that supports human decision-making. We conduct interdisciplinary research that integrates various approaches such as neuroscience, economics, and computer sciences (e.g., machine learning and artificial intelligence). Furthermore, we explore computational psychiatry to understand mental disorders such as depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and gambling addiction from the perspective of neural information processing in decision-making. Finally, we also work on neuromarketing as an application of decision neuroscience.
